What's happening
The Timber Fire was first reported the night of Saturday, August 8, 2026, in the Los Padres National Forest southeast of Loma Vista, in the rugged coastal country of Big Sur. Over the following days it grew steadily, and by the morning of Tuesday, August 11, it had reached roughly 2,000 acres with limited containment.
Fire officials have described the Timber Fire as moving at a slow rate of spread, burning along the ground through grass, brush, and oak woodland rather than climbing into the treetops. Crews have focused on protecting nearby homes and keeping the fire from crossing Highway 1, working difficult terrain with support from aircraft dropping water and retardant. As of this writing, there were no reports of injuries or destroyed structures, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
